Trends come and vanish as if they were never existed but few of them manage to remain firm in their place for decades because of its closeness to realism, among which Material design is the closest trend to realism ever emerged.
“Life of a trend is a dependent quantity and it is directly proportional to it’s closeness to realism”
One of the biggest trends of design including flat design, 3d design, gradients still exist but they are somewhat unrelated to each other or are never considered as a single entity to design.
Here Material design brings up a concept of bringing every trend into 1 entity which behaves exactly like in a real world. The material in a device now behaves as if it got a life. This is possible by using real life behavior of a material. Google chose a quantum paper for an example to implement mechanics of a behavior of a surface.
Google thought to unite its products under a single design framework which will define their uniqueness from other brands. This will generate a new feel which would be specific to Google only but thanks to the designers and the authority at Google, the design mechanism is now outsourced openly.
Lets see why Material design is of such importance and why should you as an individual or as a company should adapt it for your brand.
1. Rapid Design Framework
Google Material design comes out to be the most time effective and rapid prototyping tool to design a brand. The simple yet conclusive pre-defined CSS and animation styles helps in choosing out of the best for your design.
Well, still there are certain rules which a web designer or an app designer must follow to create a material design as documented by Google and Android in its docs but due to rapid inheritance of styles among elements makes the designing more easy, effective and approachable.
2. A Step to Realism
In past, there were some frameworks including flat design which still exists and no doubt still the choice of Microsoft products, but the Google’s new approach in material design is not because of its attractive color choices, shadows and intuitive animations but a step to bring realism in the design of a website/app.
That said, and as contrast to flat design, material design taught us the visual language that could be learned by any designer and then can be implemented by following a set of CSS rules to bring uniformity and realistic approach among websites.
3. A Long Lasting Standard
According to Matias Duarte (VP Design at Google),
“The principles behind them I think should be timeless”
i.e they would last forever. The claim is a bit early but surely, the future revolutionary theories and concepts would base on those Google material design app/web principles laid down by designers at Google.
The concepts including the usage of material colors and themes, placement of materials, action of material icons and buttons and other clickable items and the behavior of overall site is nearly based on the universal laws of physics which brings the interface into life.
4. Feeling of the Brand
There was never been a straight set of rules been implemented by designers to design a brand except the perception of using colors from the logo to bring a uniformity in a brand reputation.
Google’s new approach solves this problem by setting up guidelines to innovate brands for the clients in the form of an android/ios app or web applications. Now, every brand can have its own feel of web/app of their choice. Let the designers use the frameworks and create a feel based upon the conclusions of the clients. This can be achieved by manipulating CSS actions and interfaces to create a certain brand action and feel specific to that brand only.
5. Light Weighted Framework
One thing, which really moved the designers to choose this framework as their skill asset is because material design uses less resources and brings up more than it actually needs.
The need and to the point styles create a light weighted page ultimately reduces the page load time and decreases bounce rate. Google Material design’s code is also clean, simple and an inherited one i.e it’s easy to create more with less code.
6. Easy Implementation
When it comes to implement material design CSS and html syntax, it’s easy for even a newbies to understand the doc, practice it and come up with new ideas and definition for its own use.
The doc of Material design simplifies the concepts of material design by showing some great animated examples to understand the principles and physics behind the behavior of the material on interface.
There are tons of examples out there which could help you understand the code behind each element. I would recommend visiting Google’s product sites including Google Wallet, Google Contributor, Google for Work, Rework with Google, Google Developers and Google’s Product Forums.
7. The First Ever Complete Design Bible
No doubt, the material design is the first ever deep documented design bible that illuminates and points on every aspect as possible. From layouts to animation, everything is been defined and regulated with awesome animated examples.
Whether it be your smallest button or your huge content layout, everything is prescribed in Google and Android docs for material design.
The defined CSS rules and regulations aren’t restricting any designers to follow the primitive guidelines but to ensure that anything which is been customized must be regulated and informed to other aspects in your designs to create uniformity in your design.
8. Increased Usability
Unlike Bootstrap, Google Material design also laid down usability principles to ensure a better performance for all types of people. Whether it be the disabled persons or RTL language users, everyone is been into consideration in the material design like using the visual language of material icons helps in representing actions without words is widely used in the Google Material Design.
The interface is quite robust and clean which brings a perfect usable experience for the newbies, disabled and other target customers by making the icons and actions so simple that even the newbies could understand it in the first attempt and would love it for sure.
9. A Gateway for Increased Engagement
2015 was the year of Material design. Many of the sites that implemented material design got a great response from increased user engagement.
One thing that resulted in an increased user engagement is the immediate and realistic reflex of every action. A click of a button, hovering on a label, or a time delayed response everything is really proving better than a stuffed designed site or app.
10. Google Material Design is Responsive
Luckily, everything is packed with the material design including the responsive design framework system. Google Material design implements grid system in its responsive layout approach. The Google Doc on Material design explains everything about how to create a responsive experience in websites and apps.
Material design not only fulfills the responsive design needs, but also defines the behavior and pattern of the components on each screen. I love the way Google addresses each and every aspect of responsive design UI in detail.
I would really recommend Google Material design to be implemented in your future projects as it does have everything from resources to how-to guides with animated examples and references. Remember, to keep it simple and effective for customers. Just don’t overdo with the components and animations. Best of Luck!
